Almost half of the American population suffers from at least one chronic illness, and that statistic is constantly rising. Those with pre-existing conditions or incurable diseases live in constant fear that their health will be held hostage by a corrupt health care system. In the fight to cope with this hardship, patients have more adversaries than allies, and it often becomes a choice between life-saving treatment or crippling debt.

My new series of work is designed to convey the overwhelming physical, emotional and financial burdens of acute illness. These daily struggles consume every aspect of life, contributing to a culture of fear, stress and isolation that ultimately leads to a lack of hope and loss of identity.

This multi-media series reflects an aesthetically cold and sterile environment. The work features large-scale installations, as well as sculptural work utilizing medical supplies to create a visceral, abstract narrative. As public health becomes less of a fundamental human right and more of a commodity, this series is a call to action to end the ruthless exploitation of our most vulnerable population.

Horizon is the title of this body of work, inspired by natural tranquility and the human experience of nature. It is a series of conceptual sculptures reflecting nature’s discovery and life’s reality. Our observation of the horizon is of a flattened line that stretches as far as the eye can see. Scientifically, the horizon is considered to be two dimensional, however, I have tried to deliver this concept as a three dimensional presentation. I utilized stainless steel bent in a 90 degree angle, which creates an illusion of tension between light and time, achieving a balance between two and three dimensions. As light hits the sculptural forms, it creates flattened shadows and intricate silhouettes.  This demonstrates how light informs and orients our understanding and interpretation of our surroundings.

In this series, I explore the physical and sociological effects of relationships through geometric forms made of steel, fabric and paper. This abstracted torsos or chests represent the illogical, the imperfect, the feminine vs. the masculine, the transformation from beauty to pain, and the conflicting desires for restraint and release.

This work is made of steel and glass rods, which I have arranged to resemble a book. The five pieces consist of chapters that represent decades of memories and experiences, addressing a reality that we shape like a novel. The work poses the question of what is a fictional representation and what is the truth. The answer–ultimately reality or fantasy both reach the same conclusion.
